REGISTRATION1. Students can enroll in the festival by filling out the appropriate registration paperwork, obtained from Mrs. Harris. Paperwork is due February 1, 2001.
2. All participants must pay the $18 registration fee by February 1. (Payment is by cash or check made out to "MVHS Drama.")
3. All festival participants must be currently enrolled in their participating high school.

1. A non-returnable photocopy of all play selections and music must accompany each entry form. (Theatre games are exempted.) Each photocopy must be marked with the appropriate entry number (will be given to you by Mrs. Harris).
2. All selections must be from published plays. (Theatre games are exempted.)
3. Selections may not be used from screenplays, television plays, short stories, novels, or periodicals.

1. Theatre sports participants may not participate in any other acting category, but are permitted to participate in the design competition.
2. A student may participate in a maximum of two performance categories.
3. A student may not participate within the same specific acting category more than once.
4. Student actors may be student designers; student designers may be student actors.
5. Competitors scheduled for more than one acting category in the same hour should attend the group even competition before attending the solo or small group competition.

RULES GOVERNING THE COMPETITION
1. No scenery is allowed.
2. Essential hand props are permitted.
3. Costumes are permitted in all categories except Theatre Games.
4. Open or closed flames and pyrotechnics of any sort are not permitted in the competition.
5. No weapons of any kind are permitted on the Fullerton College Campus.
6. Prop weapons may be requested for competition use from the Fullerton College Theatre Department. Please see Mrs. Harris for details in order to request weapons BEFORE the competition date.
7. There are specific time limits for all categories (see category listings). Each category entry must include an introduction, which will not be part of the category time limit. The introduction shall include student name(s) (except for One-Acts and Musical Theatre), Festival ID number, and title of the work. The time will begin after the introduction.
8. Festival Timers will be positioned in all competition rooms. Timers will take attendance, handle competition schedule conflicts, establish order of competitors, introduce the judges, collect ballots and critique sheets from the judges, and time all competition. Timers will identify where they will be seated during the competition. Timers will signal when the competitor will begin. Timers will raise their right hand when 15 seconds remain before the time limit is over. Timers will stand up and say "Time" when time is over. Competitors who fail to stop when "Time" is announced will be disqualified.
9. Unauthorized personnel are not permitted in the judges or tabulation areas.
10. Judges' Evaluation Sheets will be issued only to the high school teacher/director.

ONE ACTS PERFORMANCE CATEGORY RULES
1. One Act Plays shall adhere to a fifteen (15) minute time limit.
2. One Act Plays shall be limited to two entries per school.
3. One Act Plays shall have no limit on the number of cast members.
4. One Act Play selections shall be from published one-act plays.
5. Three (3) minutes prior to the fifteen (15) minutes start time will be allowed for setup.
6. Three (3) minutes after the fifteen (15) minute stop time will be allowed for strike.
7. General area or work lighting will be provided.
8. Special effects and pyrotechnics are not permitted.
9. Recorded sound effects or music are not permitted.
10. The One Act performance spaces may be as small as 12 ft. by 16 ft.
11. Fullerton College Theatre Arts Department will provide one (1) table and two (2) chairs.
12. No weapons are permitted unless ordered from Fullerton College in the registration packet.
13. Select a one act play that does not depend upon elaborate technical or design elements.
14. Select a one act play that focuses on ensemble work and acting skills.
15. Look for new material. There are new one act plays published yearly.
16. Select a one act play that keeps the interest and the age range of the performers in mind.

MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE CATEGORY RULES
1. Musical Theatre competition shall have a minimum of two (2) performers. Solo performers are not permitted.
2. A participant may portray only one role unless specifically designated by the playwright.
3. Musical Theatre competition should feature the vocal, acting, and movement capabilities of the participants.
4. The material presented in the Musical Theatre Competition shall include a "Logical" beginning, middle, and conclusion.
5. Musical Theatre Participants shall provide for their own live accompaniment, therefor:
- Taped musical accompaniment is not permitted.
- Acappella performances are not permitted.
- Lip-synching performances are not permitted.
6. The acting area may be as small as 12 ft. x 16 ft.
7. One piano will be provided.
8. Selections and dialogue must be from published musicals and revues. Published original student work must include the names of the composer, lyricist, librettists, copyright, and publication date.

CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE ACTING PERFORMANCE RULES
1. Dramatic and Humorous Contemporary Ensembles shall adhere to a five (5) minute time limit.
2. Contemporary ensemble teams shall consist of two to five actors.

1. Dramatic and Humorous monologues shall adhere to a three (3) minute time limit.
2. Selections shall be taken from stage plays published after 1900.
3. Selections from screenplays, television plays, periodicals, and novels are not permitted.
4. One chair will be provided.

CHILDREN'S THEATRE PERFORMANCE RULES
1. Children's Theatre ensembles shall adhere to a ten (10) minute time limit.
2. Children's Theatre team shall consist of two or more students.
3. Direction should demonstrate an understanding of pace, reasonably creative movement, the necessity for variety, appropriate casting, and respect for children.
4. Selections should be designed to appeal to children rather than adults, and should be intended for 6-10 year old audiences.
5. No recorded effects are allowed.
6. The acting space may be as small as 12 ft. x 16 ft., and the floor may be carpeted.
7. One table and two chairs will be provided.
8. If the selection contains singing, all rules noted in Musical Theatre apply.
9. A piece that does not depend upon technical effects or elaborate lighting is desirable.
10. Ensemble work and acting skills should be the focus of the piece.
11. Look for new material.
12. Originality of presentation is foremost in judging criteria.

THEATRE GAMES PERFORMANCE RULES
1. Five people constitute a Theatre Games team.
2. Each school may enter no more than two teams.
3. Theatre Games participants will participate in both workshops and competition.
4. Students entered in this category may not compete in any other acting category, but may enter in the design competition.
5. All furniture and props will be furnished by Fullerton College.
6. Wear loose comfortable clothing and footwear to allow ease of movement.
Theatre Games actors will be judged on the following:
1. Adding Information - this can be done through:
- Speech (what you say - remember to be specific)
- Space work (You don't have props! Create a "where")
- Change of stage picture (when all else fails, move!)
- Emotional adjustments (laugh, cry, fall in love)
2. Listening - How well you take what another actor gives you, how well you use it. Remember that improvisers are actors and, thus, rely on each other.
3. Characters - If you are labeled as a 40 year old housewife from Minnesota please don't play yourself. Seize the opportunity to develop new and interesting characters!

ORAL PRESENTATIONS: Each Design Contestant must give and oral presentation about his or her design on Saturday, March 25, at their assigned time.
VERBAL EVALUATIONS: Verbal evaluations will be given for each Design Contestant on Saturday, March 25 at 1:00p in room 1317 for Scenic and Lighting Designs and at 1:00p in room 1329C for Graphic and Costume Designs. Each Design Contestant must be present to be considered for an award. Instructors, parents, and students welcome.
DESIGN AWARDS: Awards will be given to students who place first, second, and third in each design category.
ENTRY TAG INFORMATION:
All designs must have an entry tag attached to each piece of paperwork submitted for that design. The entry tag shall contain the following information:
- 1. Title of the drawing (what kind of drawing: ground plan, light plot, rendering, etc.)
- 2. Play Title
- 3. Name of the Theatre
- 4. Name of the Designer
- 5. Name of the Director
- 6. Name of the School
- 7. Name of the Instructor
- 8. Date of the drawing
- 9. Scale of the drawing (if appropriate)

2. A graphic design shall consist of one (1) original poster, flyer, T-shirt, or program cover from one production that was produced in the last twelve months.
3. All art work must be original.
4. All artwork must include information regarding name and location of Theatre, production dates, play titles, and playwrights.
5. Written justification for design concept must accompany each entry.
6. Photograph(s) of graphic design may accompany each entry.
7. Failure to submit all of the requirements listed above will result in disqualification.
Scoring
Total potential points awarded are twenty-five (25). Five (5) points are awarded for each of the following categories:
1. The Design: Points are awarded for the artistic merit of the design.
2. The Graphic: points are awarded for layout of the design.
3. The Information: Points are awarded for the readability of the information.
4. The Oral Presentation: Points awarded for an effective presentation. Be clear, concise, and confident when presenting your designs to the judges.
5. Justification: Points are awarded for the choices the graphic artist made and the justification of those choices.

Entry Requirements
1. Attach information tag to each piece of paperwork submitted (see Entry Tag information).
2. A Costume Design shall consist of three (3) costume sketches from one production, each sketch representing a different character. Sketches should be drawn from and actual production that was produced in the last twelve months.
3. Each sketch must be mounted separately using an 8 1/2" x 14" format.
4. Each sketch must be in color. Any medium will be accepted.
5. Fabric and trim swatches must be attached to the front of the sketches.
6. Costume sketches must be your original designs. Do not include sketches from rental costumes or purchased clothing.
7. Written justification for selection of time, era, style, fabric, and color choices are required and must accompany each entry.
8. The justification of the design must address the design concept. This must be typed or work processed and submitted in a separate folder with entry tag information.
9. Photograph(s) of the Costume Design may accompany each entry.
Scoring
Total potential points awarded are twenty-five (25). Five (5) points are awarded for each of the following categories:
1. Costume Sketch: Points are awarded on neatness, clarity of design elements, continuity between sketches, and complete labeling and identification.
2. Justification: Points are awarded on how the design supports the mood and structure of the play and why the designer made specific choices.
3. Characterization: Points are awarded for how the design reveals each character.
4. Costume Design: Points are awarded for creativity, balance of color, use of texture, harmony and on the overall visual aspect of the design.
5. Oral Presentation: Points are awarded for an effective presentation. Be clear, concise, and confident when presenting your designs to the judges.

2. Using standard symbols and references submit one (1) Light Plot from a production that has been produced in the last twelve months.
3. Using standard symbols and references submit a Board Hook Up that relates to the Light Plot of the production you are submitting.
4. Submit a typed or work processed concept paper relating to the lighting of the production. Include in your paper why you made specific choices about color, instrumentation, angles, and control.
5. Photograph(s) of the lighting for the production may accompany the entry.
6. Failure to submit all of the requirements listed above will result in disqualification.
Scoring
Total potential points awarded are twenty (20). Five (5) points are awarded for each of the following categories.
1. Light Plot: Points are awarded for neatness, line weights, standard drafting techniques, and the ease of hanging the light plot.
2. Board Hook Up: Points are awarded on neatness and readability. Information should include dimmer, channel, and circuit numbers, instrument types, wattage, focus, and color.
3. Concept of the Lighting Design: Points are awarded for artistic use of instruments, color, angles, and control.
4. Oral Presentation: Points are awarded for an effective presentation. Be clear, concise, and confident when presenting your designs to the judges.

5. Photograph(s) of the scenic design for the production may accompany the entry.
7. Failure to submit all of the requirements listed above will result in disqualification.
Scoring
Total potential points are twenty (20). Five (5) points are awarded in each of the following categories:
1. Ground Plan: Points are awarded for neatness, lettering, standard drafting techniques, and creative use of angles and space.
2. Models or Renderings: Points are awarded for neatness, use of color and other mediums, sense of appropriate atmosphere, creativity, and inventiveness and risk.
3. Written Work: Points are awarded for the use of metaphor, clarity of choices, and how they support the play and the commitment to the project.
4. Oral Presentation: Points are awarded for effective presentation. Be clear, concise, and confident when presenting your designs to the judges.
