Cold Reading

Judging Criteria & Form

Resources for Cold Reading Tips

This is an individual category.  Like a real audition, participants will read with a reader.  A reader is a person in the room that will read the opposite lines in the scene but does not get up to act with the actor auditioning.

Participants will have at least 5 minutes to prepare sides that will be given to them at the session.  Actors should NOT use this time to memorize lines.  Instead, the actor should concentrate on making bold yet appropriate character choices, taking risks, and listening. Participants should be prepared to take direction from the director in the room.

Scenes may be taken from the following plays:

Our Town, Hedda Gabler, The Crucible, and/or TBA

Resources for Writing Your Own Monologue

3 minutes max

These must be performed by the person that wrote the monologue.

Participants must bring a copy of their monologue to each session and hand it to the room monitor.  Room monitors will follow the monologue as it is being performed to ensure that the participant is not making it up.  With this in mind, participants should have a minimum of 3 copies of their script (for Session 1, the Wild Card session, and Finals).
