The Mission of the RoleAbout |
|
The
following proclamation was posted on the front page of the RoleAbout website
during the first year of the festival.
We want to make sure that we stay true to the ideas and vision
expressed in it. |

Over the years, we have attended dozens of
festivals. While we have had a good
time at these festivals and our students have learned a lot, we often find
that on the way home, we end up discussing what we would have done differently
if we ran the festival. Well, after
years of talking about it, we have decided to put our money where our mouth
is and give it a try! How will we be different? This festival will:
take place on one day – prelims in the morning;
finals in the afternoon.
give students a second chance, if necessary, in a wild card round.
eliminate the "long" categories – one acts; musical
theatre; and children's theatre.
add a few new categories – scenes and monologues from Film; original monologues; radio plays; and cold reading.
incorporate student judges.
employ judges that have a proven theatre backgrounds.
give students access to the judging
rubrics prior to the festival so that they know on what they are
being judged. The South Orange County RoleAbout will
strive, above all, to have simple organization, clear expectations, and
quality feedback. Our focus will be on character
development. As this festival will
take place in the fall (at a time when festivals are sparse), we want to give
students a chance to concentrate on creating great characters. Hopefully, this festival will help them
become more prepared for your upcoming shows, college auditions, and the
festival season in the spring. We hope you will join us in what promises to
be a day of quality theatre and camaraderie amongst the Southern California schools! Kathy Harris, Arts
Department Chairman, MVHS Sherrill Snyder, Theatre Arts Teacher, MVHS

Coordinator, MVHS
